Insomnia + Sleeping Disorders

Hey girl hey. And boy.

Fyi:  The following blog is going to be kind of long so I organized it to make it simpler to read.

 

– Background Story –

 So in the past month, my family and I settled in this hotel designed like a home until we find a house (if that makes sense). And um this is referring to parents and siblings not a husband and kids of my own…to young for that right now lol. Anyways, I’ve had trouble sleeping for 3 weeks straight. I would fall asleep normally but then I’d wake up randomly at either 3:20 am-ish or late 1 am so around 1:47 am-ish. At first, I thought I was in a horror movie because um 3 am?…demons?…connection? Plus, I was watching a bunch of Paranormal storytimes so I got pretty paranoid. But then my mom said to read some of the Holy Book, (could be a Bible, Quran, Psalms..ect we’ll never know 😂) pray for something then go back to sleep. When I would wake up, it was like I was fully aware like I wasn’t drowsy or sleepy, so I couldn’t go back to sleep until like 5 am when the sun would start to rise. I don’t know about you but I have the weirdest “sleeping standards” ever. First off, I hate sleeping in complete darkness and silence. It’s so unsettling and gives me anxiety. I used to try to sleep before everyone else but now I don’t really care. Anyways, after the sun would start to rise, I would feel sleepy again and sleep until 12 pm. Literally. I’m not sure if this is a sleeping disorder but it happened every. single. day. for 3 weeks ! Same routine. I sort of got used to it and would just watch YouTube videos or continue a TV show (bad idea) but once my period came, (tmi but whatever) I slept a full night. I never wake up at 2 am or 3 am anymore. I developed another routine now where I would wake up super early at like 6 am but I’d go back to sleep easily. Maybe it’s just a weird sleeping pattern. Or maybe it’s because I’m not “home”. Oh and some people say read and go back to sleep, but once I tried that and ended up finishing the whole book that night. Whoops. Sorry it was a good book. It was called The Best Possible Answer in case you were wondering. Anyways, I sleep a bit more “normally” now and I have a couple of tips for you if you have trouble sleeping so here you go.


– Tips –

  1. Avoid Artificial Lights

I hate the darkness (as I said before). I always want a lamp open or the hallway light (call me a kid I don’t really care) but artificial lighting too close to bed can damage your health. *transforms into a Science teacher* There’s a hormone in our bodies called Melatonin. It lowers blood pressure, glucose levels and body temperature. This helps us relax and get ready to sleep. However, artificial lighting (which also includes blue light from electronics #guilty 🙄) raises your stress hormones at night which could cause health problems like excess body fat, weight gain -(ohh that’s why 😂), inflammation, insulin resistance, insomnia, and HEART PROBLEMS – what?! It’s official, I’m going to die soon. Goodbye y’all. Okay never mind, I’m still alive thankfully. For now. Okay now for the solution. I recommend turning all the lights off and leaving a bit of your curtain open. That way some of natural moonlight could peer into your room and it wouldn’t be as dark. (but make sure the part of the curtain open is away from your face to prevent creepy neighbors watching you sleep) Also, try to stay away from electronics before you sleep..something I’m not really good at doing.

 2. Use The Washroom

Okay I know this is a bit tmi but no one likes to sleep in discomfort. So go do what you gotta do.

3. Change Your Position 

This is pretty self explanatory but if you’ve been in the same position for like ever, change it. Get into a comfortable position. Hog your bed. Well unless you’re married then you gotta give your husband/wife a fair share but you get the idea ➡️ get comfortable.

 4. Flip Your Pillow

5. Get Into Comfortable Clothing

If you’re feeling itchy/uncomfortable from your clothes or too hot in them then change. I’m pretty sure you probably figured this out yourself but again, make sure you’re comfortable.

6. Don’t Over-think

If you keep thinking and stressing your brain, then sleep isn’t coming any time soon. I usually get thoughts like “how do you sleep?” or “cmon sleep already”. Don’t rush your brain. You have all night. Literally 😂

7. Do Something Boring

Now if you find reading boring, then read. You’ll get bored and end up sleeping. Kind of like when you’re in class lol. I also recommend reading a text book. Those are the lamest! Even if you like reading, at one point you won’t be able to read anymore…unless you’re like me. But hey, at least the night is over right?

8. Watch a Movie/ TV Show

Now I know I said no artificial lights BUT this comes with some conditions. Put the brightness on really low and don’t focus on what you’re watching. Turn the other way and think about something else. This is for all the people who can’t sleep in complete silence like me…oh wait no one does? Cool.

9. Aim For A Nap

Tell yourself that you’re really sleepy and you’re just going to take a short nap. It might trick your mind or maybe not. It helps me though.

Those are my tips. I have a friend called Iman and she went through days with Insomnia, Sleep Paralysis and worse stuff than me. I asked her if she had any tips and here are some of hers. ⬇️


 

Iman’s Tips

     Her words are in italics.

 1. Have a light scent in the room.

It usually helps your brain release this kind of hormone so you fall asleep. (I think she meant Melatonin)

 2. Try and actually get yourself productive during the day. 

It gets you super tired so you’ll fall asleep in no time.

 3. Never and I say NEVER  use an electronic or any device in the 1 hour period before sleeping.

 Blue light harms your eyes giving you restless feelings and it also builds up stress without you knowing. (similar to my artificial lights point)

4. Have a dark cold room.

A dark room is key, nobody sleeps in the sunlight. (umm…)

A cold room because it causes you to cuddle your blankets which makes you more comfortable.

 5. Lighting

If you don’t like sleeping in the dark, try finding some source that emits warm comforting light. Those give really good vibes.

When she texted me this, I was like um why so specific? As if we’re going to Walmart and asking,

“Hello, one warm comforting light that gives really good vibes on the go please”

 And she said: “Idk maybe put a blanket over a lamp”

                                                         🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

When I was in 5th grade, I did that and it was all tumblr for like 1 minute and then I smelt smoke…long story short, the blanket had a hole in it so don’t do that. Ain’t nobody trying to catch on fire Iman. We’re not Katniss Everdeen.


 

If all fails, then just wait it out. Read a book or think about some happy memories. You have all night to reflect and spend some time with yourself alone. Eventually, you’ll sleep and don’t forget, the sun will rise again and you’ll start a new day. Exciting 😂.

I hope this blog helped. Actually this blog probably made you sleep from boredom so I actually did help.     OMG yess. You already know how bad I am at sleeping (my latest post) and it seems to be getting worse. Ugh, its so annoying! It probably doesn’t help that I’m on my phone till I feel like sleeping 😂 but I’m so wide awake that I just do 😅.
    These tips are really useful though (even if I can’t stick to them) so thanksss xx

    I agree with all but especially changing into comfortable clothes and trying not to overthink and force yourself to sleep. I’ve done that several times and thought I was crazy for arguing with my mind about sleep lol

    I’m definitely guilty of using electronics before bed. A few times though i’ve become super sleepy while using them to watch a movie that I dropped my phone onto the floor (first few times without a cover!) 😦 These are some great tips, I have to try them out, 😀 I like the fact you said leave something on but quietly, I hate being in complete silence when trying to sleep, there’s always weird noises if I turn everything off and try to sleep in silence…it’s never actually silent, lol!
