Biggest Turn-downs When Picking Out A New Book

Hey girl hey. And boy.

It’s not a surprise that I’m a picky reader. I usually stick to one genre and only one style of writing because I’m literally the hardest to impress when it comes to books. ๐Ÿ˜‚ย And I actually look carefully when it comes to choosing one. I was in the library yesterday and realized I actually take ages to pick out a book. I have such high standards that I can tell within ten seconds whether or not I’d like it. And yes, I’m totally judging the book based on what I see but that’s how life works, okay? No I’m kidding – judge books, not people. ๐Ÿ˜‚ย I didn’t even know what to call this post. And you really know you’re going crazy when you’re turned off by a BOOK. So yeah, we’re just going to go with turn-downs. ๐Ÿ˜‚ย Let’s get starteddd.

*Disclaimer* I am in no way trying to bash these books/genres. I suck at writing so I’m in no place to judge but this is the thought process I personally have when picking out new books. HOW MANY TIMES DID I SAY BOOK?

Title

I’m all about clever titles. I don’t mind if it’s simple but the title is one of the first things I look at so certain ones only catch my attention. If a book has a title like “Barry Trotter and The Shiny Sock” (no shade) – I’m most likely not going to bother looking at it. But if it’s something like “Before I Go” or “20 More Days”, I’d probably reach for it. I just used those titles as examples but I’m not sure 20 More Days is real – you get the idea.

Colour

The colour scheme actually makes a difference. I’m drawn to light and warm colours so if you have a black and orange cover, I won’t be drawn to it. I don’t know it depends on the shades you use and how dramatic the colours are. I just searched book covers and picked out a few I’d like and colours I wouldn’t like to give you an idea.

Yasss covers:

No hate to Harry Potter lol but you get what I mean.

Layout

I’m all about simple layout. I usually don’t like it when actual people are in the cover. I used to like that when I was younger but now I just prefer simple covers with flowers or things like that. Call me girly all you want.

Dialogue

I never knew they had books in dialogues but this one is so dissapointinggg. This one time I saw the back of a book and it seemed pretty interesting so I signed it out but turns out it’s all DIALOGUE! Like there’s movies for a reasonnn. I didn’t sign up for Shakespearrre. ๐Ÿ˜‚ย Don’t get me wrong – I love the dialogue in a book the most but when it’s just plain that with no emotions it gets really dry.

Font

This is a big one as well. If the font is too small, it’s a no-no. If the font is too big, it’s a no-no. I need it just right and clear.

ew did I just use a BTS gif? Alexa, don’t come at me – I still don’t like them.

A Likely Story

I’ve read so many books that when I go to read what it’s about it sounds like one I already read. I love Katie West’s books because they’re different every time. I’m usually more drawn to high schools stories with twists like murder and mystery.

Third Person

AAAAAAAH THIS IS THE BIGGEST ONE!! I swear, sometimes books pass all my criterias but I open them and BAM “Leah went to the store”. Oh hell nooooooo.๐Ÿ˜‚ย  I hate third person so much you don’t even know. Okay it’s not that bad but like come on, I feel no connections with books when they’re third person. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And they have to be Young Adult Fiction and realistic fiction, of course.ย ๐Ÿ˜‚ย Okay I may need to give more books a try so leave your suggestions down below.

What’s your biggest turn down when picking out a book?

What genre is your favourite?

Which books do you recommend?

I’ll see you all in my next post.

Yessssss, Bay!! I totally agree with you about the covers. But please don’t be turned off when you see that the Artemis Fowl books have pictures of people on them-they more than make up for it in their awesomeness (hint, hint, lol!). A pet peeve of mine is when book jackets only have a quote/excerpt from the book on the back and no synopsis- the quote/excerpt sounds interesting and all that, but it doesn’t tell me what the book is ABOUT.
    Great posy!

Aaaah thank you!! Hahahahhaha I’ll try not to ๐Ÿ˜‚ If they’re good looking then hey ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚ IKRRR like nuuu I want the tea! But this one time I ended up reading a third person one with that quote on the back (worst combination I can’t) but it actually turns out to be good in the end. Like I actually got tingles – ew that sounds weird. ANYWAYS! Neat responsy

If you want to branch out a bit I would totally recommend โ€˜state of sorrowโ€™ it is a 3rd person book (if I remember correctly) but itโ€™s so good and so different! I found that I could connect to Sorrow because it was really well written. Itโ€™s fantasy and the world is so well-done! Also, you can never say books too many times ๐Ÿ˜‚

My biggest turn-down is definitely the cover, I donโ€™t like books that have real people on the front either. If you like high school murder mysteries I recommend โ€˜One Of Us Is Lyingโ€™. Donโ€™t judge it before you read it! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’• My favourite genre is definitely young adult – fantasy ๐Ÿ˜Š Great post! ๐Ÿ˜„

I totally agree ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Also, bright covers are the best!!! Idk why they make such dark covers… like why would you want to start reading something that looks like a thundercloud on the front. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Such a lovely, fun post to read – Iโ€™m very picky when it comes to choosing books too so definitely agree with your points! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I normally read like the first page when choosing a book as well – if it doesnโ€™t impress me or Iโ€™m bored already, then itโ€™s a no! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Autumn x

Me not being too much of a bookworm I AM SUCH A PICKY READER! EVEN PICKIER THAN YOU! For me I like reading books that are just a little predictible with a couple plot twists. I like books that have me hooked on them yaknowwhatimsayin? And I HATE no happy ending books like shut up I’m reading you to get my mind off harsh realities and here you are being a harsh reality? JUST MAKE IT WORK OUT! And if there’s no happy ending there better be one in the sequel

IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Actually it might be ๐Ÿ˜‚ Yesss I love plot twists..but they better end happily. Ahhh Ikr sad endings give me no closureee! And they rip my heart like how could youu? I sat here and read this book for hours and you did this to me?! ๐Ÿ˜‚
