Hey girl hey. And boy.
It’s not a surprise that I’m a picky reader. I usually stick to one genre and only one style of writing because I’m literally the hardest to impress when it comes to books. 😂 And I actually look carefully when it comes to choosing one. I was in the library yesterday and realized I actually take ages to pick out a book. I have such high standards that I can tell within ten seconds whether or not I’d like it. And yes, I’m totally judging the book based on what I see but that’s how life works, okay? No I’m kidding – judge books, not people. 😂 I didn’t even know what to call this post. And you really know you’re going crazy when you’re turned off by a BOOK. So yeah, we’re just going to go with turn-downs. 😂 Let’s get starteddd.
*Disclaimer* I am in no way trying to bash these books/genres. I suck at writing so I’m in no place to judge but this is the thought process I personally have when picking out new books. HOW MANY TIMES DID I SAY BOOK?
I’m all about clever titles. I don’t mind if it’s simple but the title is one of the first things I look at so certain ones only catch my attention. If a book has a title like “Barry Trotter and The Shiny Sock” (no shade) – I’m most likely not going to bother looking at it. But if it’s something like “Before I Go” or “20 More Days”, I’d probably reach for it. I just used those titles as examples but I’m not sure 20 More Days is real – you get the idea.
The colour scheme actually makes a difference. I’m drawn to light and warm colours so if you have a black and orange cover, I won’t be drawn to it. I don’t know it depends on the shades you use and how dramatic the colours are. I just searched book covers and picked out a few I’d like and colours I wouldn’t like to give you an idea.
No hate to Harry Potter lol but you get what I mean.
I’m all about simple layout. I usually don’t like it when actual people are in the cover. I used to like that when I was younger but now I just prefer simple covers with flowers or things like that. Call me girly all you want.
I never knew they had books in dialogues but this one is so dissapointinggg. This one time I saw the back of a book and it seemed pretty interesting so I signed it out but turns out it’s all DIALOGUE! Like there’s movies for a reasonnn. I didn’t sign up for Shakespearrre. 😂 Don’t get me wrong – I love the dialogue in a book the most but when it’s just plain that with no emotions it gets really dry.
This is a big one as well. If the font is too small, it’s a no-no. If the font is too big, it’s a no-no. I need it just right and clear.
A Likely Story
I’ve read so many books that when I go to read what it’s about it sounds like one I already read. I love Katie West’s books because they’re different every time. I’m usually more drawn to high schools stories with twists like murder and mystery.
AAAAAAAH THIS IS THE BIGGEST ONE!! I swear, sometimes books pass all my criterias but I open them and BAM “Leah went to the store”. Oh hell nooooooo.😂 I hate third person so much you don’t even know. Okay it’s not that bad but like come on, I feel no connections with books when they’re third person. 😂
And they have to be Young Adult Fiction and realistic fiction, of course. 😂 Okay I may need to give more books a try so leave your suggestions down below.
What’s your biggest turn down when picking out a book?
What genre is your favourite?
Which books do you recommend?
I’ll see you all in my next post.
