Hey girl hey. And boy.
I never really imagined that I’d have to make this post but with everything that happened lately, I feel the need to do so. If you haven’t heard yet, there was a mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday. Muslims gathered for Friday prayer on what was supposed to be a day of purity and gathering, they were instead greeted with bullets, gore and death. In a place of worship. In a place where everyone is supposed to feel secure. For no reason other than ignorance, hatred and Islamophobia. 49 were killed and this wasn’t the first. Shootings in Quebec, demolishing mosques in Africa, trapping Muslim Uighurs in concentration camps, banning Muslims..etc. This is not okay. This is not justifiable. This is not acceptable. To anyone, anywhere.
What hurts the most is the fact that whenever bombings or terrorist attacks happen in white countries like America, France..etc, the whole world is shaken. The whole world weeps. Over 3000 people, over 90 people, over 3 people. But when millions of Muslims get their homes bombed every day, when women continuously get raped in their own homes by soldiers, when innocent children are gassed or killed in their homes or schools, no one looks their way. Instead, they are in favour of the attackers. And the moment they try to defend themselves, they’re suddenly called terrorists. I’m not talking about ISIS but I’m not trying to get too political so I won’t call out any organizations today. The point is, so much injustice goes on in the world but no one gives a crap until it happens to their own kind. Truth is, we’re all the same kind. We’re all mankind. We all share this earth, we are all children of Adam and Eve and no matter what race we are or what religion we follow, no one is superior over the other. No one. I’m sick and tired of where people focus and who they blame because of how the media portrays it.
I believe one of the main reasons Islamophobia exists (or any type of discrimination but mainly this one) is because of misunderstanding and lack of education. People misinterpret the verses of the Quran, they lie about the prophets and there is so much ignorance when it comes to understanding context and the line between religion and culture. People read one side of the story and decide they know everything. People read one line from the Quran and now they’re scholars on the whole religion. Here’s an example.
One day, Bob decided to go camping. After roasting some marshmallows, he decided to sleep in his tent. Suddenly, a bear breaks into the tent and attacks Bob. Bob is scratched and bit and he has a serious tear in his arm. The bear lunges at him. Bob pulls out some pepper spray and sprays the bear’s eyes.
Now what if you just read..: “Bob pulls out some pepper spray and sprays the bear’s eyes.”
Woaaah animal abuse. How could he do such a thing? Humans are so cruel. We need to kill them before they attack the rest of our bears.
Do you get the idea? If I give you the context and time of this story, you would’ve understood but unfortunately, we’re impatient. We love spreading hatred. We make assumptions. We take what we hear for what it is and never really take a second to think about it or double check. It’s human nature and I do it too. But acting on it can be a serious problem.
I think it’s important to fully understand something before judging it. And that goes for me too. Before I wrap things up, here are a few things you can do in your community to support Muslims during this time:
- ask a friend about Islam
- visit a local mosque (tbh I’d like to visit a church or temple as well because I have a few questions about Christianity AND I know nothing about Judaism. Like seriously, nothing.)
- be there for them if they need it
- call out Islamophobia for what it is when you see it (it can be scary sometimes but love will always overcome hate and truth will always overcome lies)
- respect all religions
Last night, the mosque held a discussion about the shooting and religious leaders from around the city came together to speak about discrimination and injustice. The Christians and Jews who attended were so supportive and it was so amazing to come together even though it would have been better under better circumstances. Nonetheless, we were together. And I feel like it’s super important for communities to be there for one another in tough times. Whether it’s a church, temple, sanctuary, mosque..etc, places of worship need to be protected and we need to stand for what’s right. You can check the first one off by the end of this post but I’m just going to end off with one more point.
For the Muslims who are reading this who are feeling scared or unsafe after what happened, don’t fear. I know it’s easier said than done but we need to hold onto our religion now more than ever. We will not hide from it but we will stand up for it. The only one we need to fear is God and that’s it. Some of us live in places where there is discrimination but just remember that this life is a test and the martyrs around the world will not go unnoticed. Our efforts will not go unnoticed. If you’re scared to pray or wear the hijab if you’re a woman, don’t be. This society will call us radicals for following obligations of our religions and will take us as a threats because of verses they don’t understand. They will blame us for actions that others have done to ruin our image. But we need to take action and we need to speak up. We need to set good examples. We need to overcome hatred with truth and love. This life is short – don’t lose your purpose. Here are a few signs of the end times that are proven from this incident:
- When it will be regarded as a shame to act on Quranic injunctions.
- When untrustworthy people will be regarded as trustworthy and the trustworthy will be regarded as untrustworthy.
- When oppression, jealousy, and greed become the order of the day.
- When lies prevail over the truth.
- When violence, bloodshed and anarchy become common
- Knowledge will be taken away and ignorance will prevail
And this hadith is evident now more than before:
Hold on. It’ll be worth it.
Anddd that’s all for today.
I know this is a heavy post but I just wanted to get it off my chest especially after what I’ve been hearing lately. Always educate yourself. And remember when I said ask a friend about Islam? I’d like to make a future post where I address all your questions and I’m obviously your bestest (yes, that’s a word) friend, right? Jokes aside, leave all the questions you have in the comments. Anything you’re unclear about, a verse you heard that you want context on, what Islam says on a certain topic (women’s rights, marriage…etc), leave anything you’re curious about. And if you couldn’t care less, that’s fine too but I really wanted to encourage you to get things clarified instead of assuming or believing things from biased sources.
What did you think about the mosque shooting?
What questions do you have about Islam?
Thank you so so much if you made it this far. This post is a bit all over the place so I thank you for hearing me and what I had to say. Well not hearing me but you get the idea. I have a few posts scheduled this week so we’ll get back to normal but thank you again. I’ll see you in my next post.
Bayyy. 💞
I have a ton of questions about islam gurl, just been like DYIING to ask but ya know now i’ve got a chance
1) dO yOU hAVE aS hARD a tIME fINDING fOOD aCCEPTABLE fOR eATING aS i dO
2) Do all Muslims pray five times a day?
3) Do Muslims place value on memorizing Qu’ran like Jews and Christians place value on memorizing their texts?
4) It always seems like the only Muslims you hear about are very, VERY observant – are there less-observant Muslims, like there are more “casual” Jews and Christians?
5) What does the Qu’ran and Muslims say on witchcraft? (pretty much what i’m asking is if muslims do harry potter and crap lol)
6) What are some other holidays that Muslims celebrate besides Ramadan and Eid-Al-Fitr?
7) What are Muslim birthday traditions like?
8) Do Muslims observe a sabbath? If they do, what’s it like?
9) Are there any scandalous Qu’ran stories you can tell me about because there are tons of Bible stories that are like not for sunday school classes >:)
10) What do Muslims think of abortion?
11) What do Muslims think of celibacy?
12) What do Muslims think of non-Arab-country Muslims? Like are there ethnically Hispanic or white Muslims?

AAAH GIRL THANK YOU FOR ALL THESE QUESTIONS! They’re so interesting and I can’t wait to answer them. Sis I have questions about Judaism too but I’ll email you on that soon. Some questions front the list i need clarity on:
Sabbath according to Google is when Jews and Christians stay holy for that day? Like a rest day? Is it like commited to worshipping God more? How do you practise it in Judaism because if it’s more time worshipping than I’d have an answer but I don’t know if there are other rituals.
Celibacy means abstaining from marriage or sexual relations? Does this mean that someone not get married at all? Or what Islam says about sex before marriage? I just want to clarify haha.
Ooh what do you mean by first world problems? What is an example in Judaism? Is it like “ugh I can’t find the right hijab shade” sort of problems? 😂 And things Muslims in the west experience?
Love the questions – thank you!!!

Hey, Bayance! Thank you so much for sharing this post. I am always saddened to hear news about bombings of the Muslims mosques or even their houses. As a humanities and social sciences student, I had the privilege to study the religion Islam for a little bit and understand its culture and beliefs. One thing I’ll never forget about our lessons is that Islam is a religion of peace, and yet Islam is always the one who gets attacked by terrorists. People having Islamophobia is actually saddening because Islam is not to be blamed for the terrorist’s actions. I believe and will stay to this belief that Muslims are not terrorists and that terrorism has no religion. I really feel sorry to our Muslim friends out there who experience such things. 😦
And I wanted to ask:
1. Can you please share a more deeper details about how Muslims worship Allah? I’d like to know more about the Five Pillars!
2. And, do all Muslims still practice the Five Pillars?

Thank you SO much Jirah!! This comment was so kind and genuine! Aah humanities and social sciences – how is it? I’m kind of debating on what I want to major in. Thank you!! Many terrorists hurt others in Islam’s name even though that’s absolutely not the context that the commandment came in. Taking an innocent life will always be wrong, no matter what. Terrorism no place in religion, yes! Me too – I’m very fortunate to be living in an accepting community but I know that others aren’t as lucky 😔
Thank you so much for these great questions! ❤️❤️ Can’t wait to answer them.

i live in victoria, so this was super close to us (it’s closer than you think, trust) and i have a muslim friend who lives in new zealand and she thankfully wasn’t a part of this, but family members were. i know from her that Islam is a religion of peace, and i am so sorry and horrified that people could do this, to any religion. i’m sending all my love to you and your family 💖

Thank you so so much for this sweet comment!! Ah I’m so sorry for what happened to her – I hope everyone was okay. 😔❤️ It disgusts me how someone could do something like this to any place of worship and institutional areas where people are supposed to feel safe. Thank you thank you!! 💕

Everything is thankfully fine. I know, thinking it is one thing (still not good), but putting it into action is another completely.

Mashallah, a beautiful post, pointing out exactly what needed to be said, as a fellow Muslim I too have been worried and scared about the events in New Zealand and this post has put me at some ease, I also think it’s very admirable of you to open up your comments section to questions (which you have a lot of!) and it’s brilliant you’re education people about Islam, thank you x

Aah thank you that means so much I’m so glad I have a platform where we can openly talk and ask about important issues. Thank you for reading! ❤️❤️

That example of the bear is soooo true in so many circumstances – especially this one. If we don’t listen and try to understand – how can we ever get to know someone else and their beliefs? It’s when we don’t put ourselves in someone else’s shoes that things like this happen. What happened in NZ is absolutely heart-breaking, but it must bring us together and not divide us.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to ask questions – that’s really great! Here are a few of mine (hope they’re okay??)
• What does being a Muslim mean in your everyday life? What do you do differently on a day-to-day basis that’s different to other people/faiths?
• Are there different types of Muslims? I’ve heard before that there are two types, but idk if that’s true???
• I get this might be quite hard to sum up, but what would you say the main message of Islam is?
• Is it an important part of your religion to try to convert others to Islam?
• What are Muslims thoughts on gender equality/roles? (I get that it probably differs, but on the whole…??)

Aah thank you – so true!! We have to be open to understand one another and really have more compassion! YES exactly – we should always try to unite when hardships happen even and then we can truly heal and improve. ❤️
Aaaaah girl you asked such great questions! I’m so excited to answer them.

Heyo! So I had another question that I thought of – hope that’s okay lol!
– What’s it like being a Muslim teenager in modern society (with things like dating, the internet, school, fashion, etc)? What things are the same for you as everyone else and what’s different?

Ooo I have questions.
1) Do all Muslims have to wear the hijab?
2) How can you tell someone is Muslim?
3) Where do you disagree with Christianity? (I’m curious, sorry)
4) Most Catholics are Catholic because of culture/ tradition/how they were brought up. Most Christians are Christian not out of tradition/because their parents are but because they see a need for a Savoir. Which is Muslims most like in that sense? Catholic or Christian?
5) Who is your savior? A Christians savior is Jesus. Is yours Jesus or Mary or Muhammed or..?
6) What like a big no-no for Muslims? ie. taking off the hijab.
7) Do you guys curse?
8) Is it okay if you are Muslim and you marry someone of a different religion/atheist?
9) Do you guys do something symbolic to signify your faith? Ie. Christians get baptized and take part in communion.
10) What are the most commonly asked questions for Muslims?

You and all the people at the shooting are in my prayers! I may not be Muslim, but you’re one of my best friends and it makes me so angry when I hear about people discriminating and terrorizing Muslims. And to be honest, you guys are one of the sanest religions out there, I mean I know a lot of ”Christians” that support some stuff that is definitely not Christian or sane in general.
A lot of the questions I wanted to ask were already asked (and asked a whole lot more eloquently than I would have, lol) but here’s the two I still have;
1. Are Muslims vegetarian? Or can you only eat certain types of meat? I’ve heard some different things but nothing was ever clear.
2. What are your Mosque services like? (if that’s what you call them, I’m sorry, I’m just a little clueless here) Do you go once a week? Is it like Church, where you go on a certain day?
Amazing posy, girl! You write about these things so well, you should do more!

I agree with this so much, like come on guys WE’RE ALL FREAKIN HUMAN BEINGS JUST BE NICE. Ugh this kind of stuff just makes me mad! In 8th grade History we’re doing women’s rights stuff and my teacher was explaining how some women like Alice Paul got a tube stuck down their throat because they went on a hunger strike in jail and they were there for showing up at the voting polls and when Mrs. P said they stuck tubes down womens throats I stood up quickly and said (really loudly) that I’d stick it up their a*s. I now have a detention on Thursday… 😂
Also, if you got any questions on Christianity/Catholicism I’m here for ya! Technically I’m Catholic but it’s literally the same thing! I mean literally, in Sunday School class in 4th grade we had this huge talk about how Christianity/Catholicism is the same thing.

Bayy, everybody NEEDS to read this post. I’m not a Muslim, but I would defend one if I it happening. Jeeeez, even your featured image made anger boil inside me. Why do people think they have the right to do these things? They have destroyed a place of safety, and killed people. Cold-blooded murderers. I am so sick of tired of how twisted and wrong this world is. I’m tired of hearing all the bad things that happen out there and I’m sick of people not suffering the consequences of their actions, of tearing apart families. Everybody is different, that’s what makes us so special ❤

Dear Bay,
I had no internet at the time, and thus had no idea that you, you brave and strong and beautiful you, wrote this post. But I DID know about the mosque shooting in Christchurch, and I’m not just sorry anymore, I’m grieving for the people who lost loved ones, for the people who just wanted to worship God in a place of peace, scared for my Muslim neighbors, because if that could happen in New Zealand, then it could happen here and people are scared and scarred and I am praying that God will take this world and remove the cancer that is causing people to forget that everyone is human too. We’re all loved by the same God, and it’s SO WRONG for any one religion- the people of that faith, whether they’re Jews or Muslims or Christians to be excluded and shamed for their faith.
And also, me being the MCU nerd that I am, would like to say that you’re like a Canadian Kamala Khan XD (Ms. Marvel) and there’s this part in Ms. Marvel: Mecca, where Kamala’s dad has to butcher a goat and Kamala’s like, “NO FLOSSIEEEE” and I died laughing and I am sorry, that was so random I’m not sure why I mentioned it. 😛 And also, I would love to ask you some questions about Islam/being Muslim. 🙂 And if you have questions about Christianity I would love to answer (although there’s a bunch of people offering anyway XD but)
-what’s your favorite celebrations/holidays and why?
-do people give you weird looks for wearing the hijab? (like people give me weird looks for wearing a skirt and I know that’s not the same but I was wondering)
-what do Muslims believe about Jesus/the Trinity thing?
-do Muslims have Qu’ran studies (like how Christians have Bible studies) and they spend hoooooooooooooooooooooours talking about certain things?
-also, what’s fasting like for you?
-do you memorize hadiths? And stuff from the Qu’ran?
-if you do, do you have favorite passages?
-what is being a Muslim in one sentence?
-is your God Allah, or/and is the name for “God” Allah in Arabic? I get confused.
-are there door to door Muslim missionaries, like how LDS believers do?

This is an amazing post! I’m so glad you wrote about it! I hate how the shooting in Christchurch was referred to as a mass shooting by some instead of a terrorist attack! If it wasn’t a white person, they would immediately call it a terrorist attack! And islamophobia (and it’s not really a phobia – it’s just being a dick) is definitely down to ignorance and lack of education and understanding!

I know this is late but I have some questions! Thank you!
also I know very little about Muslims so excuse my ignorance…
– do you wear the hijab all the time? how many do you/typical people own?
– what food restrictions do you have?
– who is your savior?
– where do you believe you will go when you die?
– what do you think about abortion?
– do you have bible studies, except with the Quran? (also sorry if I spelled that wrong)
– do you memorize verses? (or what they are called in the Quran)
– are you allowed to wear anything you want?
Thank you! Also if you have any questions about Christians, I would love to answer them for you! I know a lot of people have told you that, but I’m sure that some of us are different denominations (types, pretty much) so you might get different answers 🙂
