5 Ways To Appreciate Your Parents

Hey girl hey. And boy.

The other day I was looking through my blog Instagram (@bayanceblogs- that promo even though I barely post, follow anyways😂), and Minnu shared this post where this TV show interviewer asked this guy if he liked his mother or father more. He said his father but in Islam, you’re supposed to have your priorities be your mother first and then your father but turns out the boy’s mother passed away in the war and oml he started crying and my heart actually SHATTERED. I feel like I don’t show enough gratitude towards my parents even though I’m sure they’re probably the best parents I could ever get?! I also remembered the little girl I volunteer with and my dad once called and she was like yeah my dad was over protective too and so I said oh yeah? Is he at home? And she’s like no… he died. At first, I thought maybe it was an accident so I asked how and turns out he got beat to death during the civil war like my heart actually couldn’t function anymore. I don’t know why people can be so cruel and kill families like that and no one even brings any awareness to it!

I need to appreciate my parents more because they could’ve been taken away when I was younger like the other two kids I talked about but that’s not what God had planned for me so your girl has to show some gratitudeee. And I know a lot of teenagers nowadays have issues with their parents “getting too into their business” or “tAkInG tHeIr pHoNeS” which to be honest is a pretty first world reason because there are people out there who would kill to see their parents again. 🙄  But honestly it just has to do with circumstances so I wanted to bring attention to it today. Here are 5 ways you can show appreciation towards your parents!

  1. Physical Affection (hugs, cheek-kisses)

Now I’m not too much of a hugger (especially with my dad 😂) but when I was literally having a meltdown over that video yesterday (thanks Minnu) I went to hug them both and I feel like fathers need more appreciation! If you still have yours around, just know that they do so much for you even when they don’t show it. Just make sure you’re present and showing them love as much as you can because you never know when they might leave.

2. Help With Chores

This is a huge one for my mom especially and I seriously need to help more often.😂 You can help around the house but also do favours like taking care of siblings when they’re busy and just trying to carry burdens off of them as much as you can. My brother helps a lot with driving me around and getting groceries so you can help your parent that way too if you’re old enough. (Drive me around too while you’re at it. 😂)

3. Give Them Your Time

This is super important because as we get older, we get busier and forget to make time for our loved ones. Always make family priority and spend time with them as much as you can. Talk to them about your struggles and fun times. Your parents are your rock and besides, they gave you so much time growing up even if you don’t remember it.

4. Communicate Frequently

This is kind of like the last one but make sure you’re returning calls, texting and meeting as much as possible if you live far away. Parents get genuinely concerned about you so always make sure you’re checking in. Whether it’s through memes or ‘good mornings’, make sure you don’t abandon them.

5. Self-care

I asked my mom to help me come up with my last one but she said she’ll be happy if the child can take care of themselves and make her proud (obviously when they’re not a kid anymore). Even as a kid, if you can dress by yourself, your mom will be super proud and same goes to when you’re older. Taking care of your grades, of your hygiene and more will show your parents that you’re turning independent and that they taught you well. Obviously, reach out for help and give them a chance to guide you but making smart decisions and putting work into yourself will help you appreciate the work your parents put into you.

Bonus: Forgiveness

Personally, my parents haven’t wronged me in any way and I am so so thankful for that blessing but I’m aware that some parents abandoned their children or beat their children and I can’t even imagine how much pain that would cause mentally. I just want you to know that forgiving them will take that burden off your shoulders. Don’t hold grudges- especially, against your parents. Even if your mom was an alcoholic who left you at 4, she didn’t abort you – she stayed those 9 months and went through the labour and fed you. Forgiving isn’t dismissing what happened – it’s not letting your past hold you back. Wow you guys I sound like a full on tumblr quote but here are some quotes I’ll leave you off with. Also, make sure you apologize to your parents as much as you can even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Remember that they’re human and put yourself in their shoes like they did when taking care of you.

I knowww! 😭 It’s really sad to hear teens nowadays like “omg mom what do you want” or “ugh mom I’m too busy with my boy/girlfriend” like…really? Aah that means so much – thank you for reading!!

Aww I loved this! This is a really important topic that not enough people seem to care about. Have you read the book Saints and Misfits? If you haven’t you definitely should — a lot of the topics the book covers align with the things you’ve posted about. Hugs from California!💜
